Memos…
May 9th, 2006 — maxwellI’m not exactly sure what the obession is over memos. You get memos for this and memos for that, and I’m not sure what the purpose is. Especially, when you could easily send out an e-mail to everyone in it’s place, at least that would make more sense. Then if they were important, a folder could easily be created in your inbox to keep one in the event it’s needed later. It would be easily indexed and searchable after that. What do people do though, but send out paper upon more paper. So instead of receiving a nice relatively spaceless message, you get a piece of paper that ultimately ends up a) in the garbage, or b) on your desk cluttering it up.
I know you hear it all the time from “geeks” about hating paper, but if I wanted paper I’d buy a book and read it. When I have a message to send out, I either e-mail it, post a note on a content management system, or send an instant message to whomever needs the message. Simple, easy, and effective. I don’t even have to leave my seat to do so. Now if I’d send a paper message, I’d be require to type it up and print it. If you’re like some, you would print one copy and then walk to the copier machine to make more copies. This first requires getting out of your seat and walking to the printer/copier, and then walking around to everyone to physically hand them a message. I don’t get this. If you’d add up all the time someone might possibly spend walking around to just hand out pieces of paper, you’d probably be surprised at the amount of time this would/could equal in a year.
Apparently I don’t make sense though, because memos continue to be the thing to do. Sometimes I expect to get a memo telling me that I’ll be getting a memo. Paper…I don’t understand it for some things. It’s good for books, manuals, and toilet paper but not ordinary messages.
