New nukes?
August 17th, 2006 — maxwellApparently our government is considering developing new nuclear weapons to start replacing the stockpile of 10,000 (that we know about) we already have in our possession. It’s been almost 20 years since a nuclear bomb (again, that we know about) has been created in the United States. The new nuke will be called the Reliable Replacement Warhead program. Apparently the concern is that our weapons will start to deteriorate due to plutonium decay, even though yearly checks haven’t noted any damage to the weapons as of yet. Also, weapons-grade plutonium has a half-life of 24,000 years, so why do we need new nukes? As we police the world and tell other countries to not develop nuclear technology, we’re going to fire up a new program, if Congress approves, to replace thousands of perfectly good nukes. That doesn’t seem like a wise move. In my opinion, that’s only going to make countries like Iran and North Korea speed up their development, because they will turn around say well you’re doing it. While I understand we hold no interest in actually using these weapons on anyone and I think it’s a good move to stop North Korea and Iran from developing nukes themselves, I don’t think we really need to cause provocation in development for countries that would use such means to harm others. Just my two cents…again, I’m glad my tax money is at wonderful work here. And oh yeah, I thought we had signed some sort of agreement with Russia years ago about refraining from building new nuclear weapons?
