RIAA suing XM Satellite Radio
May 17th, 2006 — maxwellThey’re suing XM now! XM has a new device capable of recording music, allowing subscribers only (yes I said only subscribers) to hold up to 50 hours of music time. On top of that, the music/audio cannot be pulled off this device, but will remain on the device as long as a) the listener leaves it on his/her device, and b) they are a paid subscriber. So, yes I said that correctly, not only are they after licensing fees from XM, even though you can’t redistribute the audio, but they are are comparing it to an iPod. It’s not a damn MP3 player. It’s a simple device that allows you to store your XM broadcasts until you want to listen to them again.
XM, unlike Sirius, is standing up for its customers. They said “…it will fight the lawsuit and accused the labels of using the courts as leverage during business negotiations.” Here’s a more detailed story at Yahoo. I just hope they stick to their guns.
I’ve recently subscribed to XM mainly because the radio sucks in my area. Now I’m really glad I have XM to listen to, because I am refusing to buy new albums anymore. I have enough music to listen to already, they aren’t getting any more of my money. Someone really needs to put a stop to their greed. It’d be if nice a lot people would refuse to purchase new music for a period of time. Perhaps they would get the hint after their sales would fall through the roof. Ridiculous greed!
